  First Week at CMIT South

Another fantastic start at CLF schools… CMIT South professional staff has done a fabulous job with managing 450 students at a brand new facility. On Monday and Tuesday, our students walked in quietly, excited, and ready to start the school year on their first days. Our community is enjoying the great facility which is filled with "knowledge", "care", "high expectations", "enthusiasm", and "technology".

Special thanks go to CLF for offering this safe learning place as a choice school, our very involved parents for volunteering their time to prepare the building, the distinguished staff for their tireless efforts, and our students for meeting the high expectations.

I look forward to meeting with all our parents at back to school nights which start at 6 pm on the following days:

6th Grade Families - 09/01/2015
7th Grade Families - 09/02/2015
8th Grade Families - 09/03/2015

  CMIT South Uniform Policy

The uniform policy for CMIT has been in effect since the first day of school and for the most part we are seeing a wonderful response from our students. They are remembering the policy and procedures and following them accordingly.

As an incentive for our students this year, we will be awarding 5 SIS points on a monthly basis to every student who is in full uniform compliance for the month. As a reminder, on a daily basis we will be checking for:

- Navy blue or khaki bottoms (no jeans or dresses, carpenter or cargo pants, stretch pants or leggings, no gathering or elastic at the bottom) Please note: Shorts/skorts/capri pants may only be worn from August 24 – October 31st and April 1st – the last day of the school year.
- Green or Blue polo shirt with the CMIT logo
- Black Belt (pants, shorts, skorts, skirts and shorts must be belted if the item has belt loops)
- Socks may be any color (preferably white, navy blue, black or kelly green) but must be plain without distracting designs and no mix-match socks
- Shoes must be ALL black, including the shoelaces and soles of the shoe
- ID must be on a lanyard and visible at all times

A more detailed copy of the uniform policy, with pictures of appropriate attire and all regulations, are available on the CMIT South website under Students: Uniform Policy

  Computer Technology Education

We’re excited to introduce COMPUTER SCIENCE PRINCIPLES to the 7th and 8th graders. This course advances students’ understanding of the technical aspects of computing including, programming and algorithm design, computer system organization and operation, and data representation and information organization. Specific programming languages may include Processing, C++, and Java. We will be using SCRATCH which allows you to program your own interactive stories, games, and animations — and share your creations with others in the online community.

We are again offering MICROSOFT WORD to incoming 6th graders where they will learn Internet Safety, Computing Fundamentals, Keyboarding Skills with the goal of certification. As well, students will be introduced to Microsoft Power Point and Excel.

  News and Noteworthies

Princeton, Hampton, and UMD are off to a great start to the school year. This week in Mr. Bevard’s class, we did great work laying the foundation for our classroom for the coming year.

Students in Mr. Bevard’s class studied the pyramid of learning (also known as percentages of retention) during our introduction to effective note-taking. We demonstrated the importance of taking quality notes by completing a mock before-and-after quiz.

In addition to learning the layout of the new facility, these 7th graders have successfully established a set of classroom rules by which to abide throughout the school year. Mr. Bevard drafted a list of expectations for students to consider, and they’ve produced our classroom’s rules and regulations.

As a new teacher at CMIT South, I am overwhelmed with joy and gladness. The Administrators are very positive and supportive. The whole staff is like family. The parents are very helpful and cooperative, especially during the process of transition to the new site. With great conviction, I am so proud to say that the CMIT South students are the BEST! They are very respectful to adults and their fellow students. They are eager to learn, meet high expectations, and build an awesome character.

  Art

Greetings parents and students,

Welcome to another GREAT year at CMITS! I am excited to work with both our new and returning artists. Last year the art students put a ton of effort and heart into their projects which really made my role here a JOY. We will begin this semester with a study of Pablo Picasso and some of his famous works depicting self portraits and portraits of others. We will also begin to explore the basics of color theory through the use of different mediums.

I am also looking forward to the new CMITS Mural/Canvas painting art club on Wednesdays from 3:00pm - 4:00pm where students who really enjoy art will have the opportunity to paint on artists easels and also create large scale inspirational murals that will be displayed around the school.
As always, it is my privilege to teach your student and my door is always open for parent participation or to chat.

"Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up." ~ Pablo Picasso

  Academic Integrity lesson

As part of college and career readiness, CMIT South is starting the new school year by ensuring that our students understand what Academic Integrity means as it relates to the tasks assigned to them in all classes. Lessons to be delivered in the Social Studies class will include modules on plagiarism, citations, types of sources, source reliability, summarizing and paraphrasing and ultimately presenting ones own original ideas.

Please note that this is not only a CMIT South requirement but college and workforce requirement. CMIT South teachers will not give any credit to student work lacking in academic integrity. Please help to stress the importance of this as student begin their scholarly work this school year.

  Student Locker Times

Students at CMIT South will have three opportunities to visit their lockers during the school day.
- During Arrival in the AM
- Before lunch
- During Dismissal in the PM

During arrival, students will leave their bookbags in ther locker. They will retrieve all necessary materials for the classes they have before lunch. They will leave the electronic devices in the locker.

Before lunch, students will go back to their lockers to return materials from classes they've had. They will retrieve materials for classes they have after lunch. They will also retrieve their lunches or lunch money. Please note that students with lunch bag will not be returning to lockers to put lunch bags away. We encourage students to pack their lunches in paper bags or ziploc bags. There are tubs available in the cafeteria to drop any lunch containers students may have after lunch. These items will not be allowed in classrooms.

At dismissal, students will report to their lockers to retrieve their belongings to take home. Students will also retrieve lunch bags as they exit the school building.
