  1.A. Breakfast with the Principal

Breakfast with the Principal program has started with Columbia parents on Wednesday. About 20 parents as well as Mr. Sutherland, CLF Community Partnership Coordinator, attended the event. Parents had an opportunity to ask questions, share ideas and their feedback. Edmodo, homework policy, school-home communication, college placement and curriculum were the primary topics discussed.

All 6th grade breakfasts will be completed in September. Refer to the previous newsletter editions to sign up for breakfasts. 7th and 8th grade sessions are planned to take place in October and November.

Parents and students turned out to participate in many activities including Mathematics Magic, Floating paper clip, Color exploration with the color wheels, ice cream making station, DNA exploration station, gravity stations, chemical reaction and many more.   2.A. Tardy After School Pick Up

All students are expected to be picked up by 3:15 p.m. unless they are staying for a club or enrichment activity. CMIT Administration gave parents a pass during the first three weeks of school to figure out travel time and pick up arrangements. Starting Monday 9/22/2015, when a student is not picked up on time the parent will receive a email reminder of the pick up expectations. The second time this occurs the parent will receive a certified letter reminding them of the expectations. The third time parents will be asked to attend a face to face meeting with the administration. At the forth occurrence the appropriate authorities will be notified.

  2.B. Ms. Morani's 7th Grade Science Class

All Students in Howard, Harvard, Yale, Hampton, and UMD now have access to their online textbook for science class. Paper textbooks will be provided, but are on back-order. Until the paper textbooks come in, (and after if you prefer) the online textbook is your students resource for Chemistry and Physics material. The pearson online textbook is exactly the same as the paper text that will be provided to your student.

While the textbook is an excellent resource for your student to study from and seek additional information on materials covered in class, it is not a "one stop shop" for the course. Many portions of the text either do not go into enough detail for the course material, or go into too much detail. As a result, I recommend students use the textbook to supplement their learning needs, the primary sources of information for the assessments should be coming from students notes, and the material directly covered in class. Slides are posted on edmodo regularly in the folder labeled "Q1 Presentations from Class" and can provide excellent insight as to what will be covered on assessments.

Login for the textbook is as follows.

1) Go to www.pearsonsuccessnet.com
2) Log in with the login information (username and password) and directions provided to the student in class.

Any additional questions can be forwarded to myself at kmorani@cmitsouth.org

. 4.C. We never forget September 11, 2001

CMIT SOUTH commemorated September 11, 2001 with a very special guest who came to speak with our students about his reflections of September 11, 2001 and what this did which sent his life in a different direction. Our guest for the afternoon was Staff Sergeant Nathan Andrews an active duty member of the United States Air Force. Staff Sgt. Andrews is stationed at Joint Base Andrews and is trained in Cyber Transport Systems of which he is currently a part of Joint Base Andrews Network Administration.

Staff Sgt. Andrews has been in the Air Force for nine years and has deployed. Staff Sgt. Andrews said that keeping America safe is the reason he joined the Air Force after graduating from high school.

Staff Sgt. Andrews gave our students the opportunity to ask numerous questions regarding his position in the Air Force and our students were extremely excited about knowing some facets of his job.

A tribute to all active duty military personnel as well as veterans was given by acknowledging the veteran military personnel at CMIT SOUTH which consists of Mrs. Jaslynn Laurence-Army, Mr. Distin-Navy, Dr. Green-Reed, Navy, and Mrs. Bates, Army as well as active duty personnel Commander Hand, Staff Sgt. Andrews and Lt. Gerald R. Reed. The students stood up and gave a standing ovation to those who are serving and those who have served their country.
