Safety During Arrival and Dismissal

I would like to thank CMIT South families for following the drop off and pick up procedures. Lets make sure

- we arrive by 7:25 am and park in the lot to wait until doors open

- no students are dismissed to the parking lot before 7:30 as CMIT South staff provides supervision after 7:25 am in the morning

- students are ready to get off the cars (quick kiss & ride) so that traffic is not backed up behind us

- students are picked up on time, by 3:10 pm in the afternoon

- we drive within speed limits posted

- we do not drive in wrong direction against one-way signs

- students are not asked to leave property without any adult supervision

- we all volunteer "one day a year" to help the traffic; refer to the PTO announcements to sign up and volunteer only one day a year

Thank you for everyone's attention to this safety matter.

CMIT Basketball
CMIT Parents and Guardians,

Boy’s and Girl’s basketball tryouts begin October 27th. Students wishing to participate must have a completed physical on file. Currently, CMIT’s gym is still under construction and we must hold our tryouts off site. Girl’s tryouts will be held at Melwood ES from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Boy’s tryouts will be held at Camp Spring Community Church from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. We completely understand this is not the ideal time for parents to get their children to and from tryouts at that time frame. However, it is the only time available for CMIT to practice at these facilities.

There will be an additional day for students to participate in tryouts on Saturday, October 31st at Walker Mill Middle School. Boy’s tryouts will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Girl’s tryouts will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Walker Mill Middle School.

Thank you in advance for your patience in this process as we wait for our gym to become available to our students. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Mr. Kevin Young at

How to Talk to Your Student About Bullying
It is important that as a parent/guardian you talk to your student about bullying. Start by talking about what is bullying. Students who know what bullying is can better identify when it is occurring. When talking to your student about bullying encourage him/her to answer the questions honestly and that there is no right or wrong answer.

Here are a few questions from to get the conversation started:

• What does “bullying” mean to you?

• Describe what kids who bully are like. Why do you think people bully?

• Who are the adults you trust most when it comes to things like bullying?

• Have you ever felt scared to go to school because you were afraid of bullying? What ways have you tried to change it?

• What do you think parents can do to help stop bullying?

• Have you or your friends left other kids out on purpose? Do you think that was bullying? Why or why not?

• What do you usually do when you see bullying going on?

• Do you ever see kids at your school being bullied by other kids? How does it make you feel?

• Have you ever tried to help someone who is being bullied? What happened? What would you do if it happens again?

These questions should help you to get the conversation about bullying started. Again, it is important that everyone is aware of what bullying is and when it is occurring. Next week, we will be discussing how to support a student who is being bullied.

Ms. Warehime, School Counselor

Guardians and Parents of Birthday Celebrants,

In some of our households, one of the biggest days of the year for any young child is their birthday. With this in mind, the options/procedures for birthday celebrations at CMIT-S are listed.

-- if you would like your child to have cake/cupcakes during lunch, simply come at designated lunch time to bring necessary items or your child may bring them in the morning;

-- if you would like your child to celebrate in the classroom, you will have to request and gain approval from the teacher at least two (2) days ahead to schedule;

-- if you would like to provide food other than cake/cupcakes, a request must be given to the teacher two weeks in advance to obtain approval since these items are not allowed to be partaken as a group in the cafeteria.

-- no balloons are allowed.

These rules are in place to allow the teacher to modify lesson plans to accommodate such requests.

As we continue to partner with you for a successful school year, your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

Ms. Ellis, Principal's Secretary

After School Club Pick Up
Now that clubs are in full swing here are a few reminders:

1. Remind your student to report directly to the cafeteria at dismissal. Club sponsors will pick up students from the cafeteria. Any student who is seen roaming the halls will receive negative SIS points.

2. Communicate with your students. CMIT-South has many clubs going on, if you plan to pick your student up early, please communicate with them. Otherwise, students will only be dismissed from clubs at 4 p.m. Parents are not permitted in the school after 3 p.m. unescorted by a staff member.

3. Provide a healthy snack. Due to the large amounts of popcorn left on the floors and tables in the cafeteria. Popcorn is no longer permitted as an after school snack.

Thank you for paying attention to these reminders.

Earth Scientists have completed their first major project and just took a test on the Earth's structure. We're moving into rocks and minerals in anticipation of bringing our first unit to a close with our exploration of plate tectonics.

Aquarium Science!
Our Aquarium Scientists have been very busy these past few weeks constructing a classroom worthy of CMIT South. Our young ladies and men have taken the lead in doing actual construction work, setting up aquariums, and learning about the chemistry and science behind filtration.

Our classes have ballooned from 35 students last year to 65 students this year. If anyone knows of any fish tanks currently sitting vacant in a basement, attic, or relative's house, please consider donating them to our young program. Our students would greatly benefit from the added opportunities for hands-on learning!
